Debi Irons
Debi Irons is a professional
dancer/choreographer with over 20 years experience in all aspects of the dance
world. She is the founder and Artistic Director of Art Moves Dance Company
which features improvisation and choreography in blues, modern and jazz, and was
selected for the recent Acorn Productions' CASSANDRA Project and Portland
Ballet's Portland Dances.
She has collaborated with a multitude of local, national and international
dancers including Daielma Santos, Karen Montanaro, Josie Conte, and Nancy
Salmon; she has performed the choreography of Sara Whale with Ram Island Dance;
been a soloist for Esduardo Mariscal Dance Theatre; jazzed it up with Danny
Buraczeski & Katiti King, gone modern with Doug Varone via the Bates Dance
Festival, and has toured with inflatable vaudevillian Fred Garbo.
Her favorite performance venue is with live
music, most recently with Inanna, sisters in rhythm, the Vocal Solution, and
jazz improvisation with Carole Stone, Sean McGowan, Andrea Antognoni, Jeff
Densmore, Tom Zicarelli, and Mark Kleinhaut, among others.
Debi received an NEA grant from the Maine Arts Commission for Art Moves into the
Schools Summer Dance Festival which featured student & professional shows &
master classes; she received a Maine Community Foundation Grant for Art Moves
into the Schools & Art Moves into the Schools Summer Dance Festival in Oxford
Hills. Debi is the creator and proprietor of Art Moves Dance Studio, Artistic
Director of the teen Art Moves Dance Group, and the
teacher/choreographer/catalyst for variant dance to hundreds of students yearly,
in public and private schools. Her focus is on letting students discover their
individual voice using the developmentally appropriate technique.
She continues to study, collaborate and produce, challenging herself as an
artist and human being.
Debi Irons is collaborating with choreographer/dj Niles Ford of Brooklyn, New York on Art Moves Dance Project and Urban Dance Collective's present working title, "LIFE AFTER CYNICISM" blending a hybrid of modern, jazz and afro-brazilian dance with live and recorded music to tell a human story that any audience can relate to."
